Being a good listener
I had my appraisal last week and it was time to look into the Pandora's box !!! After the formal chit chat with my manager, we got down to my accomplishments, things-to-do, strong points and weak points section. Appraisals really aren't such a big deal out here in Helsinki as compared to what it is back home, where you are made to swing from ur balls (if you are a male) .
Well, coming to the point, my manager had written that I was a good listener in my "STRENGTH'S" section. If it were in my previous company back home, I would'nt have batted an eyelid 'cause I already know how to spell "BULLSHIT", but out here in Helsinki, people truly are quite honest and "mean" what they say. So I eventually asked him what he meant?!!!
The reply was quite surprising!!! He said that in addition to me being a hard worker(Please note that working 8 hours a day is hard work according to Finnish Standards), I was a good listener and seemed intent during meetings and conferences. I was awestruck!!! In most of the meetings, I normally keep thinking of what I need to cook after going home, mentally going through the contents of my refridgerator, thinking of how to solo over the Am chord pregression, adjust my head by shifting my position slighty so as to see the angle at which, the light from the projector reflects off the bald orators head, or carefully observing the number of times the orator gives a blank look, at the end of each sub-topic, when no one asks any questions.
I could hardly hold back my laughter after hearing what my manager said, but just to be polite and not let out the fact of the matter, I smiled back. If looks could be deceptive, mine would be pure camouflage :) I came home that evening assured of a career in acting!!!
Well, I guess "A good listener is always thinking of something else" !!! :)
